Mets Fever Runs High On Main Streets Around Long Island As World Series Begins

FLORAL PARK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- The pride of the Mets has been showing up on main streets everywhere, as zealous fans made munchies and shared predictions for Game 1 of the World Series in Kansas City Tuesday.

Some schoolchildren were planning to stay late for the game Tuesday night – with the blessings of their teachers.

"They're very excited about the World Series. They've been following it because I follow it," said teacher Samantha Joltin.

Joltin was in Lynbrook buying bagels that happened to be were baked with dough dyed in the orange and blue.

"Tastes like a plain bagel – they look pretty appetizing!" said Michael Clancy of Lynbrook Bagels.

Business was brisk with a World Series theme, and the Mets' last World Series victory in 1986 seemed very long ago.

"We definitely do it for the community," said Kaitlyn Clancy of Lynbrook Bagels. "We have all our signage done, all our bagels are over there, all our employees are decked out."

And there were smiles up and down Main Street in (where), as well as a rush on game-time food. Adriana Hill of Richmond Hill, Queens was planning a menu of Mets burgers and Mets cakes, while Wendy Coirciari of East Rockaway was stocking up on Mets plates, cups and napkins.

Some Hofstra University students were superstitious.

"I've got my dad's wedding ring," said Hofstra Mets fan Joe Barone. "He's a Mets fan."

And for baker Ben Borgogne, it has been a sleepless week. His patisserie was loaded with one-of-a-kind items.

"We can't keep the items in the store. They are selling as fast as we make them," he said.
