NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — A flight crew spotted a drone late Thursday afternoon while landing at John F. Kennedy International Airport.

The crew of British Airways 177, a Boeing 777 aircraft, reported seeing the drone about five miles northeast of the airport – between 1,800 and 2,200 feet in the air, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The flight, which originated from London, was on its final approach to Runway 22 Left, the FAA said.

The FAA has notified the NYPD, which was investigating late Thursday.

FAA rules don’t permit unmanned objects above 400 feet.

In New York City, those operating drones and other similar products must have official clearance to fly within 5 miles of an airport.

Sightings of drones at local airports have been frequent in recent months. Just last week, an American Airlines flight crew reported seeing a drone as their aircraft was approaching LaGuardia Airport.
