Suffolk County Residents To Weigh In On Red Light Cameras Thursday

HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Suffolk County will hold a public hearing Thursday on the hot button topic of red light cameras.

Republicans in the county Legislature will hold the meeting at 1 p.m., WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported.

The legislators believe yellow lights have been shortened so that more tickets are given out and want the program halted until an investigation is conducted.

The head of the traffic bureau insisted the county is not trying to trap drivers into paying fines.

The lawmakers want to know what the public thinks.

"It's not possible that everybody who's driving is a bad driver out there," Hector Gavilla, who is against the cameras, told Hall.

Steven Archdeacon, who received a red light camera ticket, opposes them as well.

"If you're not driving your car, if somebody else maybe borrows your car or steals your car and runs a red light, you're responsible," he said.
