Sources: Human Remains Belong To Connecticut Couple; Son, Girlfriend Held

WESTON, Conn. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Sources on Friday said two sets of human remains are those of a Weston, Connecticut couple who went missing in August, and their son has been named as a suspect in their murder.

Jeffrey and Jeannette Navin of Easton haven't been seen since Aug. 4. Their pickup truck was found with a shattered window on Aug. 9 in a commuter lot off the Merritt Parkway in Westport.

Sources told CBS affiliate WFSB-TV, Hartford that their son, Kyle Navin, 27, has been named as a suspect in their murder. His girlfriend, Jennifer Valiante, was also arrested Friday night in connection with the deaths, sources told the station.

Kyle Navin had been named in an earlier warrant on murder charges, while Valiante was charged with conspiracy to commit murder and hindering prosecution, Connecticut State Police said.

Navin was arrested Sept. 8 on a federal gun charge but at the time had not been charged in connection with his parents' disappearance, CBS2's Lou Young reported.

The remains were found in the yard of a vacant home in Weston on Thursday afternoon after police received a tip from the homeowner, Weston Police Chief John Troxell.

"[After] a check of the yard, we located areas that appeared to have human remains, the interior of the house was checked as well with the permission of the homeowner and nothing was found in that location," Troxell said.

Meanwhile, court papers detailed a series of text messages between Kyle Navin and his father. Jeffrey Navin texted his son shortly after 12:30 p.m. on Aug. 4, saying he wasn't going home "til I know mom is okay," according to an arrest warrant affidavit. He then asked his son if he hurt his mother.

Authorities say Kyle Navin told police conflicting versions of his actions on the day his parents disappeared. And the day after his parents vanished, Kyle Navin bought germicidal bleach, hair/grease drain opener, stain remover and contractor cleanup bags, police said.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Tracy Dayton made the statement about the human remains when Kyle Navin appeared in federal court Friday for a detention hearing.

Navin was denied bail after a federal prosecutor told the judge that evidence, "strongly suggests the defendant killed his parents."

His lawyer hurried from court without comment.

A neighbor in Weston looked at the scene and wondered about how the woman she knew might have died.

"Oh, it's horrid. She was a lovely woman. She worked at the library, worked with our kids. She was always up and fun. Great to be around. We're so saddened to see all this," Erin Moore said.

Jeffrey Navin, 56, is president of J & J Refuse in Weston. Jeanette Navin, 55, is a school library aide in Weston.

State court records show Jeffrey Navin was $2.2 million in debt as of December in connection with a mortgage on a Guilford home that has been in foreclosure since 2007.

In August, police released a statement from the Navin family which said the "financial issues recently reported by the media have not been proven to be a factor for our family members' disappearance."

"Information from the authorities indicates that there are available funds still in their bank accounts that are untouched," the statement said.
