Girl, 7, Dies After Choking At Brooklyn School; Search On For Answers

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A 7-year-old girl has died days after choking at her school in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and the attorney for her family was looking for answers Saturday.

As WCBS 880's Ginny Kosola reported, family attorney David Perecman said Noelia Echaverria was pronounced dead at 8:30 p.m. Friday.

Authorities said the first-grader she choked at P.S. 250 in Williamsburg on Wednesday, Oct. 21, but there hasn't been a definitive answer as to what she was eating, if anything.

Qwaise Reid, a paramedic for Assist Ambulance, said someone from the school flagged down his ambulance and he rushed in.

"There was loud screaming so I started running faster," he said. "When I got inside to the school and I ran down the stairs, in the middle of the hallway, there was this little child there, unresponsive."

He said no one was heling called 911 and did CPR.

"I tried to do everything I could in my power to help," he said.

But Reid was then essentially fired, put on indefinite suspension from his ambulance company for leaving his patient in the ambulance – though that person was stable, not left alone, and was being transported after an eye procedure.

Reid might be covered by the Duty to Act, a protocol that says a medical professional has a duty to assist.

Meanwhile, administrators at P.S. 250 sent a letter home to parents on Monday, saying they followed protocol assuring them their children are safe.

The family said the last thing they spoke to Noelia about was her Halloween costume. She asked to be a princess.
