Suspect Charged In Stabbing Of Two People At Rutgers University Dorm
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A suspect has been charged in connection with the stabbing of two people at a Rutgers University dormitory.
Chief of University Police Kenneth Cop said the Rutgers Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call at around 6:30 p.m. on Friday, reporting a stabbing inside Mettler Residence Hall on the College Avenue campus in New Brunswick.
Two victims were found in the lobby and were taken to the hospital in stable condition.
Cop said an argument between the suspect and the victims turned violent.
"The kid was like, cut up on the stomach, and then they started screaming," said Regina Pellegrino of Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey, who was visiting a friend at the dorm.
One of the victims is a student at Rutgers, the other is not, according to Cop.
After the stabbing had been reported, university officials sent out a campuswide emergency alert and soon after found the suspect inside his dorm room at Mettler Hall, Cop said.
"Everyone was like freaking out, screaming," said Rutgers freshman Colin Sheehan of Fairlawn, New Jersey.
The suspect, 18-year-old Daniel Leandry, was taken into custody Friday night. He is charged with attempted murder, two counts of aggravated assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, Cop said.
Leandry was remanded to Middlesex County Adult Correctional facility in lieu of $735,000.00 bail.
