MTA: East Side Access Project Hits 60 Percent Completion Mark
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Within the next seven years, the Long Island Rail Road will run right into Grand Central Terminal.
As WCBS 880's Marla Diamond reported, work on the East Side Access project is more than half way done.
The project is the largest, and at $10 billion, it's the most expensive mass transit project in the nation.
"We are hear about 150 feet below Park Avenue. This is the level of the track," said MTA President of Capital Construction Michael Horodinceanu.
That's where LIRR trains will come into Manhattan's East Side. There are construction workers laying track and laying the electrical cables that will be needed to make the operation run.
Horodinceanu said the project is about 60 percent complete, and after years of slow downs and cost overruns, the project is also on budget.
"Overall I believe that we have made a lot of progress in the last three years," Horodinceanu said.
But there is still a lot of work to be done. The new terminal is expected to open in time for Christmas of 2022.
