Man Injured After Falling Down Elevator Shaft In Prospect Park South, Brooklyn

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A Brooklyn man was seriously injured Monday, after trying to escape an elevator that became stuck and falling down the shaft.

Investigators from the Department of Buildings checked out the elevator at 1 St. Paul's Ct. in Prospect Park South, Brooklyn.

Paul Masdeu was inside the elevator Monday morning when it became stuck near the third floor. He called for help, but decided to pry open the doors and try to climb out before firefighters arrived.

At that point, Masdeu fell.

Those who live in the building said the accident could have been prevented.

"That elevator should have been fixed years ago," said Bobby Davis. "Now look what happened. We have a young man in the hospital."

"There have been situations when you go to get in the elevator and it's actually like a foot below the landing," said Garrett Kafchinski.

The Department of Buildings said the elevator was checked this past summer and it was in working condition. Building management company Shamco said it cannot comment on the investigation.

Masdeu was being treated for facial injuries late Monday.
