Two Men Shot At Utica Avenue Subway Station In Bedford-Stuyvesant

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Two men were shot and wounded late Tuesday afternoon at a subway station in Brooklyn.

The shooting happened at around 5:15 p.m. Tuesday on the at the Utica Avenue A Train station in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

The victims encountered the gunman on the stairs descending into the station, and ran underground into the station after being shot, police said. The suspect fled the station after the shooting, police said.

"Very chaotic, one of the ladies was screaming," one witness told 1010 WINS' Al Jones.

The gunman apparently fired the shots from the stairs, police said.

The victims were found on the mezzanine level, police said.

One of the victims, a 27-year-old man, was shot multiple times and was not expected to survive. He was being treated at Kings County Hospital Center late Tuesday.

The second, man, 34, was also hit multiple times and was in serious condition at Kings County Hospital, police said.

After rounds started flying, people started to run for safety. As CBS2's Tracee Carrasco reported, police were still looking for the suspect on Tuesday night.

"I heard one shot first, and then I heard like a series of shots -- bang, bang, bang, bang, bang!" James Fields said.

Fields watched the chaotic scene unfold from his apartment across the street from the station.

Surveillance footage from a nearby store shows a man in a gray hoodie, believed to be the suspect, moments before he allegedly began shooting.

Chaka Parker was walking home when she got caught up in the gun fire. She had no idea where the shots were coming from.

"Everybody was just, it was just gunshots and everybody was running, so it was just anybody's bullet, you know it's like anybody could have gotten shot," Parker said.

It's unclear if the victims were the intended targets, either way people couldn't help but feel uneasy.

"I was just thinking about carnage, you know, because I was in there watching the attacks in Paris, so I can understand what these people -- they were feeling like hearing all the shots like that," Fields said.

Police were searching for a gunman in a gray hoodie, who fled south on Atlantic Avenue. They are securing surveillance video footage from several surrounding buildings.

A and C trains have been bypassing the stop in both directions while police continue to investigate. It's unclear when they will open back up.
