Police: Suspect Got Into Home, Took Items From Sleeping Couple's Bedroom In Queens

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A burglar is the last person anyone wants to see in the bedroom in the middle of the night, but that is exactly what happened to a family in Flushing, Queens early Wednesday.

As CBS2's Valerie Castro reported, the man got into a house near Union Street and 33rd Avenue in Queens, and made his way into the bedroom around 2:20 a.m. Wednesday. The man was spotted on camera crawling on his hands and knees and holding a knife between his teeth.

The homeowners and their three young children were sleeping just feet away as the man reached up and grabbed a Samsung S6 cellphone from the dresser.

The woman who lives in the home did not want to show her face. But she said her 42-year-old husband woke up when the burglary was happening.

"(The burglar) left – he just go down, run outside," the woman said.

The woman said the camera in the bedroom was meant to keep an eye on her children. She never expected to capture a brazen burglar in action.

"(I was) very scared," she said.

Video shows the man as he first approached the home, wearing a jacket, a hat, and some kind of backpack.

Later, once he was inside, the man carefully made his way into the bedroom. He then began crawling on the floor as he grabbed the phone and inspected it closely before he was scared off.

The woman said she was just glad no one in her family was hurt.

"Today, it's OK," she said.

The suspect was last seen headed west on 33rd Avenue, police said.

The suspect was described as being 6 feet 2 inches tall and 200 pounds. He was wearing all black clothing and a black snow cap with the word "diamond" in red and white lettering on it, police said.

Anyone with information was asked to call the NYPD Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS, log onto the Crime Stoppers website, or text tips to 274637 (CRIMES) and enter TIP577.
