About 70 Customers Without Water In Cranford Due To Water Main Break

CRANFORD, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Dozens of homes in Cranford, New Jersey are without water this Thanksgiving due to a water main break.

New Jersey American Water said the break in the 16-inch cast iron main was discovered around 5 a.m. Thursday in the area of Denman Road and Lincoln Avenue.

About 70 customers were without water service, while many others were experiencing low water pressure, the utility said.

Officials said bottled water has been brought to the affected area.

ElizabethTown Gas also responded to the break due to damage to their gas lines, CBS2 reported. Gas was expected to be shut off so crews can make repairs.

So far, it remains unclear what caused the break. New Jersey American Water told 1010 WINS crews are in the process of fixing the water main and expect service to be restored Thursday night.

New Jersey American Water said the main has been dug up and they are preparing to replace the line.
