Ex-Wesleyan University Student Connected To String Of Overdoses Due In Court

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Eric Longeran, one of two ex-Wesleyan University students students charged with federal crimes in connection with a rash of on-campus drug overdoses, is due in court next week.

Longeran, of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is expected to appear in New Haven for a change of plea hearing Monday.

In February, ten Wesleyan University students and two visitors had to receive medical treatment after taking a form Molly, a synthetic party drug. Two were sent to the hospital in critical condition.

The drug, a refined and more powerful form of Ecstasy (MDMA), can drive up body temperature and cause liver, kidney or cardiovascular failure.

Longeran was arrested in connection to the multiple overdoses alongside now ex-students Andrew Olson, Zachary Kramer and Rama Agha Al Kabib.

Prosecutors said authorities found numerous prescription drugs in Longeran's room. They also said police found more than 600 Xanax capsules and $310 in cash in Al Nakib's room, and nearly 200 nitrous oxide canisters, a scale and marijuana in Kramer's room.

Kramer pleaded guilty earlier this month to possessing and distributing the synthetic party drug MDMA and synthetic marijuana. Prosecutors are recommending at least a year in prison for him.
