Authorities: Woman Killed In South State Parkway Wreck; Car Was Involved In 3 Crashes

WEST BABYLON, Long Island (CBSNewYork) -- A woman was killed Sunday morning in a bizarre Long Island crash after she returned to her overturned car on the Southern State Parkway in West Babylon, authorities said.

Authorities told 1010 WINS that a woman in her 20s from Suffolk County lost control of her car, which hit a median divider and flipped over.

She survived the crash and crawled out of the car, authorities said.

But witnesses told investigators that before help arrived, the woman said she needed to retrieve something from the vehicle. She crawled back inside the overturned car, which was then struck by another vehicle, authorities said.

Authorities believe the woman involved in the original crash was killed in that collision.

Police believe the driver in the second crash did not see the woman or the car because it was dark and the car's lights were out.

A state trooper then responded and positioned his car in front of the crash scene. But another vehicle struck the police car, which was pushed into the overturned car with the woman, presumably dead at the time, still inside.

No criminal charges are expected.
