Voter Turnout For New Jersey Election In November Was Lowest Since 1924

TRENTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The percentage of registered New Jersey voters who cast a ballot in this year's general election tumbled to the lowest level in more than nine decades, according to data released Tuesday.

New Jersey State Division of Election data showed 22 percent of registered voters participated in November's election -- the lowest percentage going back to 1924.

The previous low had been 25 percent for the October 2013 special election for the U.S. Senate seat that opened after Frank Lautenberg's death. The low point for a November general election was 2011 at 27 percent.

Experts expected turnout to be low because the Assembly alone was at the top of the ticket for the first time since 1999. In that year turnout was 31 percent.

The Democrat-controlled Assembly picked up four seats in this year's election.
