Daily News & NY Post Stir Debate, Outrage With Massacre Front Pages

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - The two dominant New York City tabloids had starkly different reactions to Wednesday's massacre that left 14 people dead and 17 injured in San Bernardino, Calif.

The New York Daily News used its front page to blast Republican leaders for offering prayers for the victims, but not new gun legislation.

"God isn't fixing this. As latest batch of innocent Americans are left lying in pools of blood, cowards who could truly end gun scourge continue to hide behind meaningless platitudes," reads the New York Daily News' headline. The article associated with the headline opens with "Pray they wake up," adding "GOP presidential contenders were conspicuously silent on the issue of gun control" in the wake of the massacre.

The New York Post went in a very different direction.

"Muslim killers," declared the front page of the New York Post. "Terror eyed as couple slaughters 14 in Calif." The accompanying article mentions that the gunman is "a devout Muslim," adding the Joint Terrorism Task Force hasn't ruled out a terror link.

One woman named Mary said the Daily News headline got it right.

"I definitely think they should do gun legislation," she told 1010 WINS' Juliet Papa. "Prayers aren't going to fix this."

Another man named Walter said mass shootings is one problem, but Congress is another.

"I don't know if it's frustration, it's probably beyond frustration," he said. "I have little hope they're ever going to do anything."
