Dusty Baker: Teams That Need Speed Should Acquire Latinos, African-Americans

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- After the Mets took the National League East crown from the Nationals this past season, manager Matt Williams was fired.

Now Dusty Baker, who was hired as Washington's skipper in early November, is tasked with dethroning the Mets and returning the Nats to the postseason.

On Tuesday at the winter meetings in Nashville, Baker was asked what he told general manager Mike Rizzo he'd like to see the club add in the offseason.

His comments were a bit questionable, to say the least.

"You're always in need of left-handed pitching, left-handed hitting and in need of speed," Baker said, according to The Washington Post. "I think that's the number one thing that's missing, in the game, is speed. You know, with the need for minorities, you can help yourself -- you've got a better chance of getting some speed with Latin and African-Americans.

"I'm not being racist. That's just how it is."

Baker, 66, previously managed the Giants, Cubs and Reds.
