Will FAA Rules Be Enough To Keep Drones From NYC Airports?

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- New York's airports lead the nation in drone encounters with more than 200 reported in the last couple of years.

As WCBS 880's Ginny Kosola reported, drone encounters are at epidemic levels with New York City airports reporting more than any other region in the nation.

CBS News transportation safety analyst Mark Rosenker said from December 2013 through this past September, there have been 241 reported incidents.

Rosenker said the Federal Aviation Administration is finalizing rules for drone use, but rules may not be enough.

"Ultimately, I think the best solution will probably be some form of technological solution where we could create areas where these devices are GEO fenced off," he said.

Most of the sightings have been within five miles of an airport.
