First Avenue Reopens After Falling Bricks Force Closures, Evacuations
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- First Avenue has reopened following nearly a week of closures after bricks began falling off of an apartment building on the Upper East Side.
Police opened First Avenue around 9 p.m. Sunday night. It had been closed from 62nd to 64th Street since last Monday.
Only two East Side lanes and a bus lane on First Avenue are open, CBS2's Hazel Sanchez reported. 63rd Street is still closed between First and Second Avenues.
The two West Side lanes that run on the same side of the building with the facade that collapsed remain closed.
For the last week, construction crews have been securing the apartment building on 63rd Street with scaffolding and netting while they continue repairs.
Several businesses had to close their doors due to the incident, and the building at 346 E. 63rd had to be evacuated.
It is unclear whether or not surrounding businesses will be able to open on Monday as some streets in the area still remain closed.
