Suspect Injured In Police-Involved Shooting In Rochelle Park, NJ

ROCHELLE PARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Authorities are investigating a police-involved shooting in Rochelle Park.

Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli said the shooting involved 46-year-old Matthew Chaseman of Maywood and two police officers. It happened around 3:30 a.m. Monday on West Passaic Street right off of Route 17.

Investigators said the incident initially started when Chaseman crashed his car outside of an office building. Bricks could be seen scattered across the property and the back window of his sedan was shattered, CBS2's Ilana Gold reported.

A security guard at a nearby building saw Chaseman sitting in the vehicle after the crash and called police, authorities said.

It's unclear what sparked the shooting, but two officers shot Chaseman several times in the lower body, authorities said. Molinelli said a BB gun with the orange tip painted over to make it look like a real weapon was recovered at the scene.

Nearby resident Ed Mani said he heard about five shots.

"I was in bed actually sleeping and I heard these, pop pop pop pop, around 3:30," Mani told WCBS 880's Peter Haskell.

Gil Guintu lives across the street and could not ignore the crime scene as soon as he stepped outside to walk his sons to school.
His wife also heard the gunshots while checking on the boys in their bedroom.

"I just don't want my boys being exposed to anything like this," he told CBS2's Ilana Gold.

Many neighbors want answers about what happened.

"I'm completely in shock," said resident Kim Capucci. "Nothing ever happens in Rochelle Park ever."

The suspect was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center. The officers were not hurt.

Police and Bergen County prosecutor's office are investigating.
