City Island Residents Say Goodbye To Old Bridge As Concerns Persist About Temporary Replacement
NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- City Island residents got a last chance to walk over their beloved 114-year-old bridge on Friday.
Many, like Mary Delaney told 1010 WINS' Samantha Liebman that they'll miss its charm, right down to the sign that welcomed visitors.
"If they could have just kept a little bit of the beauty of the old bridge," she said.
The new bridge will be 17-ft wider and will include a bike lane. It comes after a 20 year fight over its design.
Now, residents are worried about a temporary bridge built next to it after a partial collapse during its paving.
"I'm just, you know not sure about how it's going to handle the traffic up here in peak season," Judy Rowe said.
Officials said the temporary bridge is sound. Besides boating it will be the only way on and off of the island until the new bridge is completed in early 2017.
