Woman Accused Of DWI With Two Children In Car Following Bay Shore Crash
BAY SHORE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A Long Island woman is accused of driving while intoxicated after a crash that left her daughter and young niece injured, police said.
Latanya Mowatt, of Deer Park, is charged with DWI, aggravated DWI under Leandra's Law and child endangerment after the Friday afternoon crash in Bay Shore, according to Suffolk County police.
Authorities said the 25-year-old apparently lost control of her Nissan Maxima and crashed into a utility pole and two parked cars sitting in a driveway on Brookdale Avenue around 4:30 p.m.
The homeowner told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall she had walked inside her home right before the crash happened.
"I heard a screech and then I heard a big explosion-type sound," she said. "Her car was flipped on its side and these cars were in the circular driveway and they're now here."
Mowatt had her 8-year-old daughter and 6-year-old niece in the car at the time, police said.
The 6-year-old suffered "serious internal injuries," according to investigators. They said Mowatt and her daughter had non-life-threatening injuries.
