Taste NY Locally-Produced Food Initiative Triples Sales, Cuomo's Office Says

ALBANY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Taste NY, New York state's effort to highlight locally produced foods and beverages, saw sales at its events and stores triple in 2015, according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo's office.

Cuomo announced that Taste NY sales jumped to more than $4.5 million from $1.5 million in 2014.

"The momentum behind Taste NY continues and is helping to expand New York's thriving food and beverage industry faster than anyone thought possible," Cuomo said in a news release. "I'm proud that our ambitious sales goal has been reached and that these efforts are helping to create jobs, support farmers and small businesses, and get the word out about the world-class products made right here in New York."

Taste NY was created in 2013 to encourage sales of food and beverages produced throughout the state. The program operates stores and hosts events around the state that bring together local manufacturers of products such as yogurt, syrup, beer and cider.

Some 11 stores are now open, including one in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico and the newest location, a Taste NY Café at Whiteface Mountain upstate. Grand Central Station also has a Taste NY store.
