Man Charged In Strangulation Of Woman, 19, In Queens

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A man was charged Tuesday night in the strangulation of a young woman in Woodhaven, Queens, in what turned out to be the first murder of the year in New York City.

Joceline Romo, 19, was found beaten and strangled in her Woodhaven first-floor apartment shortly before 11 p.m. Friday, the NYPD said. Police went to the home on 86th Street near 91st Avenue to respond to a report of an unconscious person.

Police said she was found face down in her bed.

On Tuesday, Fabian Maliza, 24, of Queens, was charged with second-degree murder in Romo's death, police said.

Julie Bolcer, a spokeswoman for the New York City Medical Examiner's office, said Romo's death had been ruled a homicide after an autopsy revealed violence, including blunt force head trauma and compression of the neck.
