French Artist Recreates Robert Capa WWII Photo On Bowery Building

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The International Center of Photography is collaborating with the artist known as JR on a public art installation in Manhattan.

The installation announced Wednesday consists of JR's three-story recreation of a photo from the International Center of Photography's collection.

The Robert Capa photo of a woman peering out of her door has been pasted onto the facade of a building adjacent to the ICP's new home on the Bowery. Capa took the photograph while documenting the Blitz in London during World War II.

JR is an artist and photographer whose work has appeared on the walls of buildings in Paris, the Middle East, Brazil and elsewhere.

The French native has a considerable body of work in New York City, with large-scale photo installations seen in Tribeca and in other areas of lower Manhattan.

In September 2015, JR also debuted "Ellis," a 14-minute short film starring New York native Robert de Niro, which explores the hidden past and untold stories of an abandoned hospital on Ellis Island. JR took the hospital and turned it into a living public art space for the shoot, with black-and-white photo images plastered on the walls and window frames.

The ICP closed its midtown museum in anticipation of its move downtown. The new space is scheduled to open this summer.
