Funeral Held For NJ Woman After Car Plunges Into Passaic River

CLIFTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A funeral was held Sunday afternoon for a woman whose car was found in the Passaic River.

Devorah Stubin, 22, of Passaic, was reported missing on Thursday.

According to officials, Stubin was stopped by Maywood police at around 8:30 p.m. Jan. 14 for driving without headlights. Police then proceeded to give her directions after she said she was lost in the area while driving to pick up her brother, police said.

Stubin's car was found on Saturday after a business owner called the police about damage done to a fence behind a funeral home in Wellington. Just beyond the fence is a 15-foot embankment. The car was found upside down in about 10 feet of water, 1010 WINS' Carol D'Auria reported earlier this week.

Stubin's 1998 gray Mitsubishi Galant was lifted out of the water around 8 p.m. Saturday, and her body was found inside.

On Sunday, mourners spilled out of the Jewish Memorial Chapel and into the parking lot in Clifton to remember Stubin.

"She was the most perfect person that I've ever known," Reizy Raven, a childhood friend of Stubin, said. "She never complained about anything, ever."

Raven said it was no surprise hundreds of volunteers in the Orthodox Jewish community were dedicated to searching for Stubin.

"When you're part of a tight-knit community like this, everyone cares about you no matter who you are," Raven said.

A representative for the Stubin family said they are requesting privacy as the formal Jewish grieving process continues through Friday afternoon, WCBS 880's Stephanie Colombini reported.

Police officials said they have not yet determined exactly why the car went into the river.
