Husband Denied Bail In Scarsdale Murder, DA Says Man A Flight Risk With Money Overseas

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Shocking new details were revealed Friday, about the murder of a pediatrician in her Scarsdale home.

The revelation came as the suspect, her estranged husband, asked a judge to be released on bail.

As CBS2's Tony Aiello reported, accused killer Jules Reich in a few days will spend his 62nd birthday behind bars.

Judge Anne Minihan refused to grant Reich bail for allegedly killing his wife Dr. Robin Goldman at their Scarsdale mansion on Wednesday.

"He's extremely upset about what happened to his wife and the situation he finds himself in right now," Reich's attorney Kerry Lawrence said.

Lawrence argued that Reich was neither a danger to the community nor a flight risk.

Prosecutor John O'Rourke strongly disagreed, saying Reich ambushed his wife in the shower stabbing her 21 times, before walking to the kitchen leaving a trail of blood, lighting up a cigarette, and calling 911, as CBS2's Brian Conybeare reported.

The D.A. said Reich has millions stashed overseas and friends with private jets who could whisk him away.

The family's rabbi, along with the couple's three children asked that Reich not be released.

The judge made Reich sign orders of protection. He cannot contact them.

"The children are afraid. The congregants of Young Israel are afraid, and I think the judge did right today to make sure that he doesn't flee," said Amy Paulin, a friend of the victim.

Reich had filed for divorce in August. Things were apparently amicable until a few weeks ago. The district attorney said Goldman grew fearful, changed the locks on the door, and talked about getting an order of protection against Reich. The couple had been set for mediation on Monday.

Reich had a bandage on his right hand. Police said he suffered an injury during the attack on his wife.

Two of Reich's sisters were in court. They left saying the shocking allegations do not reflect the Jules Reich that they know.

The defense lawyer said he may ask the court appellate division to reconsider the denial of bail.
