NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – The search continues for the man who slashed a woman on a subway train Monday morning.

A 71-year-old woman was sitting on a northbound D train near the Broadway-Lafayette station when a stranger sitting opposite her got up and slashed her on the left side of her face, police said.

The random and unprovoked attack took place at around 6:50 a.m., police sources said.

The woman told CBS2’s Valerie Castro that the attack happened while she was on her way to work.

“I take that train every morning,” she said, “It was somebody I didn’t even know, because you don’t stare at people on the train.”

There was a visible police presence in the area after the incident, and it appeared that an officer was looking for evidence on the tracks.

Other riders said news of the attack was concerning.

“It could happen to anyone you know? It could happen to me, you, anyone. That could have been my mother,” one rider said.

The victim was confident her attacker would soon face justice.

“I leave this problem to God, because he’s go to answer to God for everything that he’s done,” she said.

The woman suffered a 4-inch cut on her face and was rushed to Bellevue Hospital.

Police are searching for the suspect who is described as a male, around 18 years old. He was wearing red sneakers and black jeans.
