Report: NYC Arts Institutions Don't Reflect City's Diversity
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP)-- New York City's arts institutions are more diverse than those in other parts of the country but don't reflect the city's racial and ethnic diversity.
That's according to a new study by the city's Cultural Affairs Department.
The agency found that the staff and leadership at city-funded nonprofit cultural organizations are about 62 percent white, 35 percent minorities and 53 percent female. The city's population, meanwhile, is 33 percent white and 52 percent female.
"When it comes to making sure that every resident has an equal opportunity to contribute to this extraordinary cultural community, we need to lead by example," Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a statement. "This survey will help us find ways to foster a creative sector that opens doors for every New Yorker, regardless of their background."
The study also found that the disparity is greater at bigger organizations and that more whites fill leadership and board positions.
The department will use the data to create programs aimed at boosting diversity in the arts.
The report doesn't identify or rank individual arts groups.
