LI Civic Group Calling For More Sidewalks In Stony Brook Amid Safety Concerns

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A Long Island civic group said the Stony Brook area needs more sidewalks for safety reasons, especially near the train station.

Those calling for the change say that more sidewalks and crosswalks must be constructed to address the issues surrounding the Stony Brook train station. They said the area has become increasingly busy due to Stony Brook University and Stony Brook University Hospital.

"We would like to have a community process to come up with strategies to make it safer for pedestrians and more desirable and nicer for all users," Shawn Nuzzo, president of the Three Village Civic Association, told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall.

Nuzzo is also a volunteer firefighter and said the department has responded to a number of pedestrians being hit near the Stony Brook train station. He said a plan must be put in place to make the area safer.

Nuzzo said they brought their concerns to the town of Brookhaven. The town spokesperson did not respond to WCBS 880's request for comment.
