Boy, 4, Dies After Falling Out Of Window In Jersey City

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A 4-year-old boy died after falling out of window Saturday in Jersey City, authorities said.

It happened just after 2:30 p.m. at a building on Newark Avenue. The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office said the boy fell out of a fifth-story window and was found in the parking lot.

One man named Alberto said he rushed over when he saw another neighbor calling 911.

"I saw the baby on the floor, he got a lot of blood on the head," he told 1010 WINS' Carol D'Auria. "I see the window open."

The boy was taken to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, authorities said.

Neighbor Syedah Hasmain is heartbroken over what happened. She got emotional talking about the little boy from down the hall who she knew only as Joshua.

"I remember coming home from school almost every day and I would see him outside," she told CBS2's Brian Conybeare.

She also said there was something wrong with the window in the boy's apartment.

"There's a screen with the window and the window opens at an angle," she said. "It was a broken window."

Multiple residents said the windows in the building are not safe for kids.

"No windows over here have safety bars," said resident Denise Jorrin. "If you let a woman move in with a small child at home, you should have some type of safety or bars on the windows."

New Jersey state law requires landlords to install window guards only if a tenant requests them in writing and it's not clear if that is the case in this incident, Conybeare reported.

CBS2 reached out to the Summit Plaza Management company, but no one there answered the phone Saturday night.

The Jersey City Police Department called the situation a tragedy. The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office is investigating, but said the boy's death appears to be accidental.
