Tenants Protest Over Building Violations At Harlem Apartment Building

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Residents of a Harlem apartment building rallied Saturday over their treatment by the building's owner.

The tenants claim BCB Property Management is using the oldest tricks in the book to force them out of their rent-stabilized apartments, 1010 WINS' Carol D'Auria reported.

David Hansel, president of the Manhattanville Tenants Association, said their building at 3149 Broadway has had no gas since September and construction goes on at all hours of the night.

Hansel said workers also mix hazardous chemicals in the halls of the building and the smell permeates the apartments.

"One neighbor of mine has lived in the building for over 40 years had his living room ceiling cave in; it literally caved in," he said. "And while the ceiling has been taped up -- not patched -- there's still 20 open violations in his unit alone."

BCB Property Management is owned by the estranged wife of Robert Durst, Debrah Lee Charatan. Durst is currently being prosecuted for murder in California.

1010 WINS has reached out to BCB for comment. So far, there has been no response.
