Jets Sign Versatile Kick Returner Dri Archer To Reserve/Future Deal

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — The New York Jets have signed speedy running back-kick returner Dri Archer to a reserve/future contract.

The versatile Archer, who has also played wide receiver, was a third-round draft pick by Pittsburgh out of Kent State in 2014. He was waived by the Steelers last November.

Archer had 10 rushes for 40 yards, seven catches for 23 yards and returned 23 kickoffs for a 22.4-yard average in 20 games with the Steelers. His deal with the Jets takes effect in March, when the NFL begins 2016 business.

Jets coach Todd Bowles and general manager Mike Maccagnan recently said they want the team to be faster next season, and Archer fills the bill. He ran a 4.26-second 40-yard dash at the 2014 NFL combine, second-fastest in the last 10 years to Chris Johnson (4.24 in 2008).
