Super Bowl 50: Know Your Game Day Party Etiquette

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork)-- Everybody's laughing, eating, and just rooting for a good game.

But you could easily become the loser of the night if you cross the etiquette line.

"There is an etiquette to both throwing and attending a Super Bowl party and boy, you don't want to violate that because the other guests will call a violation," Thomas Farley, an etiquette expert also known as "Mister Manners," told CBS2's Hazel Sanchez.

Farley said first and foremost guests should be team players.

"You don't want to show up empty-handed. So for sure you're going to ask what you can bring," he said.

Some pro-tips? Never eat in the food line and, of course, stay away from double-dipping.

"You can eat largely with your hands. But that doesn't mean you go directly from the food serving bowl into your mouth. So grab yourself a plate," Farley said.

Farley also said that seat interception is an absolute no-no. He said once someone has established their spot to sit, it's sacred for the rest of the game.

Guests should be mindful of those who are there to actually watch the game and those who want to watch the half-time show or commercials. Talking loudly or talking through the entire game is frowned upon.

"Companies spend a million dollars on these commercials so you want to hear and see what they actually put into the commercial. So to me, it's no talking during the commercials... So shut up guys!" Steven Davis, a Teaneck resident, said.

So after you've purchased your contribution to the Super Bowl party, remember to be respectful of all the guests, no matter who they're rooting for. Because it is after all, just a game.
