Ten Fast Facts: Tribeca Crane Collapse

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Here are ten important facts about the fatal Manhattan crane collapse:

  1. One person was killed and three others were injured after a crane collapsed in Tribeca Friday morning just before 8:30 a.m. on Worth Street near Church Street. Survivor injuries are described as one minor, one moderate and one serious injury.
  2. The crane was being moved into a secure position because winds were approaching 25 MPH. Out of an abundance of caution, the City is instructing all 376 crawler cranes and 53 tower cranes to be secured immediately.
  3. The crane is owned by Bay Crane and operated by Galasso Trucking and Rigging Inc.
  4. The crane began operations in the area on January 30, 2016 on 60 Hudson Street to replace generators and air conditioners on the building roof. It was inspected at 6:20 AM yesterday by the Department of Buildings in preparation for its next phase of work and found to be in full compliance.
  5. FDNY deployed over 140 firefighters and EMS from over 40 units to the site.
  6. The addresses impacted are 47 to 55 Worth Street.
  7. The NYC Department of Buildings reports there is no structural damage to any of the impacted buildings.
  8. A 12 inch water main in the area of the crane has been shut down to stop a leak. DEP's early estimate is 100 people without water service.
  9. Con Ed Electric and Gas are assessing their equipment in the area after reports of natural gas odor. All gas service along Worth Street between West Broadway and Church has been turned off.
  10. The following roads are closed to vehicular traffic at this time: Southbound West Broadway from Canal Street and both directions on Worth Street from Church Street to Hudson Street.
