Eliot Spitzer Investigated For Allegedly Pushing, Choking Woman At Midtown Hotel

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer is currently being investigated by the NYPD for an alleged assault that occurred Saturday at a Midtown hotel.

Police sources told CBS2 a Russian woman claimed Spitzer pushed her and had his hands around her neck inside a room at the Plaza Hotel.

Police sources told 1010 WINS' Carol D'Auria that Spitzer and the 25-year-old woman had an argument and it turned physical. Sources also said the incident was not sexual in nature and the woman is not a prostitute.

The former governor has known the woman for the past two years.

Sources told CBS2 the argument stemmed because the woman told Spitzer she was leaving to go back to Russia, and that's when he allegedly pushed her and choked her.

The woman was hospitalized the same night for an alleged suicide attempt. CBS2 reports the woman made an attempt to cut her wrists at the hotel and that she was taken to Roosevelt Hospital. That's when she told doctors that she was allegedly assaulted by Spitzer.

1010 WINS reports the woman has stopped cooperating and is no longer talking to police.

CBS2 reports the woman told police she did not want to press any charges and was released from custody.

Spitzer was not at the hotel when police arrived, CBS2 reports.

Spitzer has not been charged and has yet to be questioned by detectives, CBS2's Brian Conybeare reports.

Lisa Linden, a spokeswoman for the former governor, told CBS2 in a statement that "there is no truth to the allegation."

Spitzer resigned as governor in March 2008 after being involved in a prostitution scandal.

He tried to make a political comeback in 2013 but lost in the Democratic primary for New York City Comptroller.
