Fairfield Police: Violent Domestic Assault Ends With Officer Fatally Shooting Man
FAIRFIELD, Conn. (CBSNewYork/AP) - A Fairfield man was shot to death by police after what officers describe as a domestic assault that left a woman and several children injured.
Police said they received a 911 call from one of the man's daughters, who managed to run to a neighbor's house for help, WCBS 880's Fran Schneidau reported.
When officers arrived at the home of Christopher and Kathleen Andrews on Mountain Laurel Road at about 6 a.m. Tuesday, they were confronted by a man in the driveway, CBS2's Lou Young reported.
"One of our officers came in on a 911 call, he actually walked up the driveway, when he did he was confronted by an individual who advanced towards him," Police Lt. Jim Perez said.
The officer ordered the man to stop, and when he refused, the officer fired his weapon, Perez told 1010 WINS' Al Jones.
"He kept advancing with something in his hand; would not comply. He just kept coming, kept coming. The officer had no option but to use deadly force," Perez said.
The man later died of his injuries at Yale New Haven Health Bridgeport Hospital in Bridgeport.
Police said the man's wife and three children -- ages 12, 13 and 15 -- were found with numerous blunt trauma injuries and stab wounds.
It is presumed they were attacked by the bat-wielding father and husband, Schneidau reported.
"It appears to be a family attack on the family by the now deceased individual," Perez said.
Police later said the 13-year-old daughter made the 911 call, while the 15-year-old son wrestled the bat way from his father.
The woman was transported to Bridgeport Hospital. Two children were taken to St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport, a third child was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital in New Haven, police said.
The woman and a child were in critical condition.
The officer involved in the incident was also being treated at Bridgeport Hospital.
