Storm Leaves Tree In Englewood Home, Tri-State Area Faces Flooding And Downed Power Lines

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Heavy rains closed roads and a storm system left hundreds of homes in the dark as it worked its way across the east coast.

As CBS2's Valerie Castro reported, the wet and soggy day reached each and every part of the Tri-State Area, leaving no roadway untouched.

All along the Garden State Parkway in New Jersey, sheets of rain battered windshields. In Long Island City, Queens, parked cars sat in several inches of water while drivers braved the flooded streets.

Coney Island, Brooklyn was also drenched with torrents of rain as the storm moved across the area.

Meanwhile, wind gusts of up to 60 mph were seen in some areas.

The heavy rain brought lots of damage along with it. In Yonkers, crews dealt with downed power lines and a fallen tree, and in Livingston, New Jersey, a tree splintered as it fell across the roadway.

And in Englewood, New Jersey, a man arrived home to find a massive tree crashed into his house, damaging the back portion of his roof. That tree also took down utility lines with it.

"The tree basically on top of our house," Jairzinho Williams said.

Williams said the room that was most damaged belongs to his 9-month-old son.

"One of the rooms where the branches are in and they just scraped up the whole room. We have another smaller room in the back of the house and the roof is also messed up," said Williams. "There's branches and debris all over the place, basically."

No one was inside when the tree came down, but it left his son's room a mess.

"Kids' room and attic. I guess the roofline is messed up, the ceiling and everything else. Not much water damage, but a lot of broken parts and stuff like that," he said.

Damage was also seen in several other areas.

In Midtown, a glass table shattered onto the pavement after a powerful gust of wind blew it off a 22nd floor balcony, injuring two women.

On the Upper West Side at 96th Street and Broadway, bricks from a façade crumbled onto the sidewalk below, but did not injure anyone.
