Long Island Man Assaulted Inside Gated Community's Clubhouse

BELLPORT, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- You'd think you were safe inside a gated community, but a Long Island man learned that's not always the case.

The suburban dad wanted to get some exercise at the gym, instead he was beaten by a mob, and it was all caught on camera.

"I believe that this guy is the one who did the most damage," 61-year-old Sergei Lymar, a respected chemist at Brookhaven Lab, told CBS2's Jennifer McLogan.

Police say Lymar is the victim of a group assault inside the clubhouse of his Bellport gated community.

"There were hits in the mouth, to my shoulder, my back, over shoulder to the jaw," Lymar told CBS2.

The beating occurred inside a building within the community last month. The door reads "restricted" and so do signs.

"No guests or visitors permitted at any time. As I say, it's not enforced," Lymar said.

Lymar finished working out inside the building and walked into the gymnasium to shoot a few hoops. It was filled with two dozen outsiders who refused to allow Lymar access, he said.

"[They] told me to go away in obscene terms," he recalled.

Lymar picked up his cell phone, hoping to take a photo to show management.

"I took it up and one of the guys started immediately punching me in the face," Lymar said.

They were coming at him from behind and Lymar stumbled toward the vestibule, where surveillance picked up the rest of the pummeling.

The scientist was hospitalized and underwent emergency facial surgery.

"They wired shut my jaw and I couldn't speak for three weeks," he said.

Police were called to the private community, but the entire group of suspects had fled.

Residents in the community complained to CBS2 regarding relaxed security, with gates often in the open position.

"It looks like security, but provides no security at all," Lymar said.

Atlantic Point management put up a crime alert poster. Community officials said they haven't found the suspects yet and that they cannot make further comment.
