Long Island Family Seeks Snow Donations To Keep Giant Snowman Through Spring

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Do you want to build a snowman?

Despite only two major snowstorms this winter, one Long Island family is hoping to make its 12-foot snowman last until spring -- and you can help.

As 1010 WINS' Carol D'Auria reported, as the weather gets warmer, the Fregoe family, of Massapequa Park, keeps the snowman going with donated snow.

"Last year we kept her going until April 20, and we asked for people to donate snow; we called it 'snow-nations.' And we got snow from as far as Vermont last year; people brought it in dry ice, dropped it off here," dad Mike.

So the goal is to last longer than April 20 this year.

Neighbors, like Amy O'Hara, love it.

"It's totally a fun thing. My son likes to come by and check out how he's doing, if he's slimmed down or not," she said.

The family plans to rely on snow donations this year as well. Fregoe said so many people enjoy the snowman that "it makes it worthwhile.''
