NYC Food Truck Lunch: Grande Loco From Big D's Grub Truck

Perry, the founder of New York Street Food, brings you his latest review on New York City street food.

Big D's Grub Truck has been around for at least 5 years, which is an eternity in food truck years. They started out serving tacos, grinders and burritos with Korean fillings, but a couple of years ago, they came out with more of a pan-Asian menu featuring Vietnamese and Thai food.

We're not quite sure what country the Grande Loco is from, but it's unlike any other NYC food truck lunch out there.

The Grande Loco is a grilled hamburger served with a fried egg, brown gravy and fresh, chopped basil. On the side are jasmine rice, cucumber slices, and pickled daikon and carrots. This "big, crazy" lunch costs $9.

They say NYC is a melting pot. This lunch is a melting pot! It has elements of Texas (beef burger with a fried egg), Thailand (chopped basil on top), Japan & Korea (pickled daikon and carrots), India (jasmine rice) and that ubiquitous middle American staple, brown gravy.

The Grande Loco was interesting, satisfying and filling on this cold winter day. The tasty, thick burger, gravy and rice made certain that we wouldn't be hungry until dinner, which is 6-7 hours away.

If you want something a little lighter, the Vietnamese Shaking Beef (above) is another dish we recommend at Big D's Grub Truck. It's basically marinated beef chunks and rice.

You can find Big D's Grub Truck on Twitter here, Facebook here, and their website is here. They make the rounds of the usual lunch spots where food truck congregate. If you're not sure where that is, find out on Big D's Twitter account.
