NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Novelist Harper Lee, author of the American classic To Kill A Mockingbird, died Thursday at the age of 89.
In 1961, Lee won a Pulitzer Prize and several other literary honors for Mockingbird.

Here are some things you may not know about the novel and film.
1: To Kill A Mockingbird was the first novel Lee published but was not the first she wrote.
2: To date, more than 40 million copies of Mockingbird have been sold. The book has also been translated into more than 40 languages.
3: Boo Radley's real name is Arthur. He is called Boo in the book because children said seeing him scared them the same way a ghost would.
4: The main character Scout's real name was Jean Lousie Finch. We never learn why she is called Scout.
5: The book was made into a movie in 1962. Actor Gregory Peck won an Academy Award for his portrayal of Atticus Finch in the film and named his grandson Harper after Lee.
