NEW YORK (CBSNewYork)–Voting is fundamental to our democracy, and civil rights organizations say many Americans are losing that hard-won right.

“Voting discrimination is not something that is relegated to the history books,” Scott Simpson, of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, told WCBS 880’s Jane Tillman Irving.

The leadership is a coalition of 200 organizations.

“The Voting Rights Act has been gutted by the Supreme Court in 2013 and since then we’ve seen a  resurgence happening across the country. There are currently two bills that are both bipartisan in Congress that would restore the Voting Rights Act,” Simpson said.

There have been no hearings and no action so far. Simpson’s reasoning is blunt and to the point.

“This is the last gasp of white supremacy attempting to enforce voting standards that are really designed to be exclusionary,” he explained.
