Search For Midtown Slashing Suspect Continues; Police Step Up Presence In Subway

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The NYPD is making its presence known at the 57th Street and 7th Avenue subway station in Midtown as a 60-year-old victim recovers from another slashing attack.

Police say the victim was boarding the crowded train car on Friday when he bumped into a man standing by the doorway, CBS2's Ilana Gold reported.

The two got into a heated argument and cursed at each other before the suspect allegedly pulled out a knife and slashed the victim across the face. The victim then went to his job at Chopard -- a luxury watch and jewelry store on 63rd and Madison -- to call 911.

"It was like 8:15, I saw the ambulance over here and cops pulled up behind him and they went right in to the ambulance somebody must have been in there injured," one witness said.

As of Saturday, the victim was still in the hospital after receiving stitches on his face, Gold reported.

Police are still searching for the suspect, which is difficult due to a lack of a detailed description of the attacker, CBS2 reported.

Reported stabbing and slashing attacks in New York City are up 21 percent — from 503 to 609 — this year compared to last year. In the transit system alone, there have been 15 slashings this year, compared to 10 for the same period last year.
