NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Six New Jersey newspapers are calling on Gov. Chris Christie to resign.

In a joint op-ed on Tuesday, the newspapers – which included Gannett-owned Asbury Park Press, the Cherry Hill Courier-Post and the Morristown Daily Record – called the New Jersey governor an “embarrassment” and “an utter disgrace.”

“We’re fed up with Gov. Chris Christie’s arrogance. We’re fed up with his opportunism. We’re fed up with his hypocrisy. We’re fed up with his sarcasm. We’re fed up with his long neglect of the state to pursue his own selfish agenda. We’re disgusted with his endorsement of Donald Trump after he spent months on the campaign trail trashing him, calling him unqualified by temperament and experience to be president,” the op-ed reads.

The papers wants Christie to step down “for the good of the state,” and if he refuses, “citizens should initiate a recall effort.”

This comes a day after Christie refused to take any off-topic questions at a news conference where he announced the nomination of Judge David Bauman as a state Supreme Court justice.

Christie told CBS2’s Dick Brennan Monday that he wasn’t answering off-topic questions because he didn’t want to.

“That’s an off-topic question. I think you understand that I’m answering on-topic questions, not off-topic questions,” Christie said, adding, “because I don’t want to.”

“Can you imagine any other governor saying that? Or President Barack Obama? Is that what Christie would have told the national press corps if he became president?” the op-ed said.

The papers also pointed out that Christie spent 261 full or partial days out of the state last year.

“New Jersey needs someone whose full attention is devoted to making life better for New Jersey’s citizens,” the op-ed reads. “That won’t happen until Christie steps down or is forced out.”

On Monday, the New Hampshire Union Leader wrote an op-ed about how they were wrong for endorsing Christie.
