Goodbye Clutter, Hello Spring: Expert Cleaning Tips To Get Your Home Organized

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Birds are chirping and crocuses are creeping up. Those are just two signs that spring is right around the corner, and with it comes spring cleaning.

If you have too many coats to count and random stuff, like a little drummer boy just tossed in the closet, then that's where you should start your spring cleaning.

Professional organizer Molly Pesce said to start where you store.

"Once you've cleaned out your closets, that's when you see if you have enough space to put away all the junk that's been piling up on your bookshelves and around your living room." Pesce told CBS2's Vanessa Murdock.

She said it's essential to take everything out.

"Somewhere in the middle of closet cleaning you're going to say 'I don't want to do this anymore,'" she said.

If it's all on the floor, you have to finish.

When you get in there, clean, dust, and vacuum.

The same rules apply to the kitchen pantry and your bedroom closet.

"A closet can look really, truly beautiful. As beautiful as the rest of the home when spring cleaning," closet expert, Collen Fitzpatrick said.

Fitzpatrick said when it's time to start putting everything back, make sure you have matching hangers and hang everything in the same direction.

Color coding is also a must.

"It's white all the way back to the jeans to the black," Fitzpatrick said.

Always get rid of stuff, which is sometimes easier said than done.

Interior designer Jonathan Rosen offered his own approach.

"I think you want to live with the things you really love, and that's how you edit," he said.

When everything is back in its place, it's time for the final sweep.

Dust mop the entire house, including switch plates and door handles, it makes a big difference.

When you're ready to get down to the nitty gritty in the kitchen grab a butter knife, and a wet paper towel. Run it around the edge of your sink and watch what kind of grime you pick up.

Goodbye gross and disorganized, hello spring.

Pese said after cleaning your space will look better, and you will feel better.
