Man Admits To Awarding Counterfeit Sports Jerseys On Wildwood Boardwalk

WILDWOOD, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A 30-year-old southern New Jersey man has admitted to his role in a scam that gave phony sports jerseys to prizewinners along the boardwalk in Wildwood.

Evan Strothers pleaded guilty to conspiring to traffic counterfeit goods between 2010 and 2012, U.S. Department of Justice officials said.

Strothers' brother, Brett, also pleaded guilty to the same charge last month.

Police said the Strotherses bought approximately 17,000 fake jerseys that were awarded to customers who won games of chance at one of the brothers' three outposts along Wildwood's boardwalk.

The brothers were arrested after Brett Strothers purchased several counterfeit jerseys from an undercover agent at a rest stop on the Garden State Parkway. They both face up to 10 years in prison and a maximum fine of $2 million.
