Death Of Inmate At Long Island Jail Under Investigation

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Authorities are investigating the death of an inmate at a Long Island jail.

The 63-year-old man died Monday morning at the Nassau County Correctional Facility in East Meadow. Authorities haven't determined what caused the man's death.

Investigators didn't immediately identify the inmate.

The death comes as the jail and its private medical provider, Armor Correctional Health Services, have come under scrutiny. The state Commission of Correction found last year that Armor has a pattern of neglectful care and provided inadequate care in the deaths of four inmates since 2011.

"It's a horrible scene medically, psychiatrically, psychologically, black mold all over the place; the inmates that got out have described the conditions within," Dr. Dean Hart, president of the advocacy group Long Island Citizens for Good Government, told 1010 WINS.

The facility and Armor have defended their operations.

The inmate's death is the second at the jail this year.

An investigation of the jail's medical practices is already under way by the state attorney general's office.
