Prosecutors: Man Charged In Fatal Attack Of Elderly Woman In Jersey City

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP)-- Authorities have made an arrest in the death of an elderly woman whose body was found in her Jersey City apartment last month.

Hudson County prosecutors say Jeffery Harley faces felony murder, armed robbery and numerous counts in the death of 81-year-old Lucila Cardenas Viejo. He was arrested Friday and his bail was set at $2 million cash.

Prosecutors say Viejo's death was ruled a homicide shortly after her body was found Feb. 7 on the floor of her Lexington Avenue apartment. They say she suffered multiple blunt and sharp force injuries.

Further details on the slaying have not been disclosed.

Neighbors say the area is normally a quiet block, but after hearing the incident, residents said you just never know when danger might come knocking at your door.

The victim, known to friends as Lucy, would go to church at St. Aloysius every day.

"She used to help everybody. If someone was sick, she would go to their house and pray with people from church. No words to describe this," Mary, a friend of the victim, told CBS2 last month.

Harley's arrest was made public Saturday. It wasn't known if he has retained an attorney.
