A Quick Workout At Your Desk Can Have You Looking And Feeling Better

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- With spring just days away, there is more incentive than ever to get in shape, but that can be tough if you're stuck behind a desk for most of the day.

As CBS2's Cindy Hsu explained, sitting for 9 hours a day can cause a lot of problems.

"Now I seem to have gotten swollen ankles from sitting all day, every day," Lisa Faraci said.

David Grossman said he winds up zoning out.

"When I'm staring at a computer screen for hours you have to lose focus at some point," he said.

Fitness expert John Rowley said it's a good idea to get up and walk around every hour-and-a-half for 5 to 10 minutes.

"Get your blood flowing, start breathing, get oxygen in your lungs, that's all," he said.

There's plenty you can do right at your desk like pushups and leg raises.

"You can sit on a ball instead of a chair to work on balance and posture, and putting exercise equipment under your desk is a good option," he said.

Rowley also likes desks that can be adjusted so you can stand while you work.

Hydration is also essential.

"You're exhausted all the time, start drinking water, you're not feeling right, start drinking water, you want to lose weight, start drinking water," he said.

If you're on the phone a lot get up and walk around the room while you're talking, it's a good way to get moving.
