New Desk Allows People To Lie Down On Job While Continuing To Work

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A new desk is allowing workers to literally lie down on the job.

CBS2's Chris Martinez reported Monday the Altwork Station was designed for people who spend the majority of their day at their computers.

Users can stand, sit, recline, and even fully lay down while continuing to work. The desk has a thin sheet of metal and magnets that are used to keep the keyboard, mouse and other items attached to the desktop.

"We wanted to make it. At the press of a button, you can transform from one position to another without putting any mental energy into it," Che Voigt, the creator of Altwork, said.

Office workers today are moving away from sitting at desks as standing work stations have become popular, with some even walking at work with a treadmill desk.

A review in the Annals of Internal Medicine found sitting for prolonged periods of time increased the risk of cardiovascular disease by 14 percent, cancer by 13 percent and nearly doubled the risk for diabetes.

"It's not uncommon for us to be at our desks, really on the box, for 10 to 12 hours a day," Eric Miller, of the Gnomon School of Visual Effects, Games and Animation, said.

The Altwork Station retails for $5,900 and will become available later this year.
